BioWare’s Heir on Sexism, Racism, Homophobia in Games

Manveer Heir, designer of a game not yet named that is said to be a continuation of Mass Effect series, was interviewed by Nathan Grayson of the PC Gaming company Rock, Paper, Shotgun after a lecture Heir gave about diversity in gaming at the Game Developer’s Conference (GDC). Heir spoke about the inherent fear of designers to promote more positive images of minorities in games. He argues that mostly white, male executives do not want to risk seeming even more insensitive towards minorities in gaming than they already do. A culture of promoting stories in games that are about a character who just happens to be minority should be in place at developing companies. Those mechanisms are slowly taking root in companies.
